Why 313 Day Matters in Detroit

Area code 313 was assigned in October 1947 as one of the original 86 area codes in the United States and the very first area code in Michigan. For generations of Detroiters, it became far more than a phone number. It represents identity, pride, and home.

The cultural weight of 313 runs deep. Eminem named a track “313” on his 1996 debut album. In the film 8 Mile, his crew called themselves “Three One Third.” Detroit rappers across every generation have referenced the area code in their lyrics as a declaration of where they are from. The techno pioneers, Motown legends, auto workers, and muralists all claim the 313.

In 2023, Detroit City Council officially recognized March 13 as 313 Day. However, Detroiters had already been celebrating it for years. What started as a grassroots movement by local businesses and community organizations has grown into one of the city’s biggest cultural moments. In 2026, it is bigger than ever.
