Delta is adding nonstop flights between Detroit and Athens, Greece, starting June 8, 2027. The route will run three times a week through October 28, Delta announced on September 25. It is the first time Detroit Metro Airport has had a nonstop flight to Athens.

“For the first time at DTW, travelers in Southeast Michigan will have nonstop access to Athens,” Chad Newton, CEO of the Wayne County Airport Authority, said in Delta’s release.
Detroit to Athens nonstop: the details
Delta will fly the route on an Airbus A330-200, a twin-aisle jet. The plane has four cabins: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort and Delta Main.
The flights are seasonal. Service starts June 8 and ends October 28, 2027, covering summer and the quieter early fall. Delta has not yet posted the days of the week, the departure times or fares. The release also did not say when tickets go on sale, so check delta.com before you plan around it.
Detroit becomes Delta’s fourth U.S. gateway to Athens, joining Atlanta, Boston and New York’s JFK, Simple Flying reported. Until now, Detroiters bound for Greece had to connect through one of those cities or through a European hub. In addition, Delta says travelers from more than 40 U.S. cities will be able to connect to Athens through Detroit.

Why Athens makes sense from Detroit
Metro Detroit has a large, long-rooted Greek community. Greektown still anchors downtown and hosts the Greek Independence Day parade each spring. For families with relatives in Greece, a nonstop cuts the trip to a single flight.
For everyone else, Athens is the jumping-off point for the islands. Ferries to Mykonos, Santorini and dozens of smaller islands leave from Piraeus and Rafina, the ports near the city. The June to October window lines up with ferry season.
The same announcement added Boston to Venice and Austin to Paris. Athens is the only new route from Detroit.
