Tonight: Racquet Up Detroit
The month opens Wednesday, August 5, with the Back-to-School Rally at Racquet Up Detroit, 6530 Outer Drive West, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Free supplies and backpacks go to students in kindergarten through 12th grade, along with pencils, pens, and notebooks. The rally also brings family activities, a bounce house, raffles, and free Kona Ice.
The Week of August 11
Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services runs a supplies giveaway Tuesday, August 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 4733 Conner St. The county repeats it later in the month in Hamtramck.
Friday, August 14 brings two. The Brightmoor Artisans Collective hosts a Back-to-School Market from 3 to 6 p.m. at 22735 Fenkell St. The same afternoon, MiSide runs its Back to School Bash from noon to 4 p.m. at the Kemeny Recreation Center, 2260 S. Fort St., with backpacks and supplies alongside face painting, bounce houses, music, lunch, and crafts.
One note on that last one. MiSide moved the Bash this year. It ran at the Heilmann Recreation Center in 2025, and several listings still circulating carry the old date and the old address. This year it is Friday the 14th at Kemeny, confirmed by MiSide.
Saturday, August 15
Two events run that day. The Grandmont Community Association holds Reading in Ramsay Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 14800 Longacre St., pairing a backpack and supply giveaway with reading activities.
Across town, Peace Over Pistols distributes 400 free backpacks for students in kindergarten through 12th grade at 10700 W. Seven Mile Rd., noon to 4 p.m., with a DJ, popcorn, cotton candy, and hot dogs. Children have to be present to receive a bag, so this is not one a parent can pick up alone.
The Rest of the Month
The Detroit Public Library’s Chase Branch hosts a Back-to-School Drop-In Party on Tuesday, August 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 17731 W. Seven Mile Rd. Two days later, the Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center runs a Back-to-School Resource Party from 2 to 6 p.m. at 8431 Rosa Parks Blvd.
Saturday, August 22 brings two more. The Impact Detroit Youth Community Hub holds its back-to-school event from 1 to 5 p.m. at the SAY Detroit Play Center, 19320 Van Dyke Ave., and the Detroit People’s Food Co-op runs a backpack giveaway from noon to 6 p.m. at 8324 Woodward Ave.
MOCAD closes the run with a Back-to-School Community Resource Fair on Sunday, August 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. at 4454 Woodward Ave. Wayne County’s second supplies giveaway follows Tuesday, August 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hamtramck Woody Plaza, 12140 Joseph Campau St.
Two Things That Decide Whether You Get One
Arrive early. Several of these run while supplies last, and a 400-backpack event in a city this size goes quickly. Showing up at the start time is usually the difference.
Check before you drive. Community giveaways move and sell out, and old listings stay online long after the details change. Confirm with the host organization the morning of.
