Jimmy Hoffa’s Lake House in Orion Township Is Now an Airbnb

Jimmy Hoffa’s family lake house on Square Lake in Orion Township is now a vacation rental. The Hoffa family bought the house in 1947 and spent summers there for decades. Now it is listed on Airbnb and Vrbo after a 16-month restoration, Fox 2 Detroit reported on September 28.

“I remember the weekends of being together,” Hoffa’s son, Jim, told Fox 2. He called it “a great way to grow up.”

Builders finished the house in 1925. Hoffa, then a rising Teamsters leader in Detroit, bought it on September 3, 1947, according to the Lake Orion Review. His wife and two children spent whole summers there.

Hoffa disappeared on July 30, 1975. The house last changed hands, contents and all, in 1986. After that, much of what was inside stayed put for about 40 years. When Fox News toured it in 2025, a wood-paneled console TV still sat in the living room, next to green shag carpet and 1975 reference books, Fox News reported. Outside stood a carved totem pole and a stone seawall that Hoffa and his son built.

One point of confusion is worth clearing up. This is the family’s summer house, not the place Hoffa was last seen. That was the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township.

How the Hoffa house was restored

John and Susan Hagen of Ortonville bought the house in May 2025. At that point, the floors sagged and weeds had buried the old stone walls, the Lake Orion Review reported.

The couple kept knotty pine paneling in parts of the house and restored the fireplace. They also uncovered the stone seawalls, built in 1966, and restored the concrete totem pole. A new dock went in, too. Inside, they reworked the 2,528-square-foot house from six bedrooms and one and a half baths to three bedrooms with more full bathrooms. Finally, they painted the siding white to match the original.

“It’s just exciting to see it come back to what it should be,” Susan Hagen told Fox 2.
