Frankenmuth has always known how to feed you. Now it knows how to put you up in style. The Mill at Zehnder Park, a four-suite boutique hotel built inside the town’s 1848 flour mill on the Cass River, opened this spring as the most luxurious stay Michigan’s Little Bavaria has ever offered. It also comes from the family that made the town famous: the Zehnders. About 90 minutes north of Detroit, it turns the classic Frankenmuth day trip into a reason to stay the night.

A Building That Earned Its Second Act
The Mill is not a themed building pretending at history. Instead, it is the history. The Hubinger brothers established the Frankenmuth Milling Co. here in 1848. At first, a waterwheel on the Cass River powered the grindstones that fed the young settlement. Later, the building held a string of small businesses. Then it sat vacant, the kind of landmark a town keeps meaning to save.
Finally, the Zehnder family did. They preserved the mill’s bones, the exposed beams and the riverside setting. As a result, the inside now works as a boutique hotel that tells the town’s story room by room.

Four Suites, Four Years That Made Frankenmuth
Each suite at the Mill at Zehnder Park is named for a pivotal year in the town’s history: 1845, 1848, 1856 and 1929. Inside, they run spacious rather than quaint. Each has a full living area, a fireplace, exposed original beams and views over the Cass River.
With only four suites in the whole building, this is the opposite of Frankenmuth’s big family resorts. In other words, it is quiet, adult and intimate, which is exactly the point.

The Landmark Lounge: You Do Not Have to Stay to Visit
The lower level holds the Landmark Lounge, a craft cocktail bar with small plates, warm lighting and vintage industrial decor built into the old mill works. Best of all, it is open to the public. That makes it the move for day-trippers. Even if your Frankenmuth run is chicken dinner and the shops, the lounge adds a grown-up nightcap the town has never really had.
The Zehnder Story, Next Chapter
The Mill comes from Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth, the family operation behind the town’s legendary family-style chicken dinners. The same family runs Zehnder’s Splash Village, the hotel and waterpark with 50,000 square feet of indoor water. So the waterpark handles the kids. Meanwhile, the Mill is for the trip without them.
