At 4:30 this afternoon, a crane will lower a 795-horsepower Mustang into Mustang Alley. Ford is using the Woodward Dream Cruise opening parade to give the Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible its global public debut, and the company is calling it the most powerful open-air Mustang ever built. Here is what is dropping in and what it actually is.

The First One in Thirteen Years
This is the first new high-performance Mustang convertible since 2013, which is the number that gives the reveal its weight. Ford Racing engineers built it, and the same supercharged 5.2-liter V8 from the Dark Horse SC coupe carries over at 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft, run through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Ford rates those figures on premium fuel per the SAE J1349 standard.
Built for Cruising, Not Lap Times
The engineering story here is the interesting part, because the convertible was deliberately not built to chase the coupe.
Ford Racing started with the Mustang GT convertible architecture and added a lightweight magnesium tower-to-tower brace across the engine to handle the supercharged V8, paired with a specially tuned next-generation MagneRide suspension.
Arie Groeneveld, the Dark Horse SC chief engineer, said both cars came from Ford Racing, but that instead of prioritizing the convertible for setting lap times, they engineered it as the ultimate top-down grand touring machine.
Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Racing, put it more bluntly. If the coupe is the race-bred side of the DNA, he said, the convertible is the pure street cred part of the formula.
What It Looks Like
New color options include Precision Purple exterior paint with a unique brake caliper color, and interiors are available in Black Onyx and Space Gray.
Drop the roof and you get what Ford is really selling: the V8 rumble mixed with supercharger whine, with nothing between the driver and the sky.
Why Woodward
Choosing Mustang Alley over an auto show floor is a deliberate move. The Dream Cruise draws the exact audience for a car like this, and Mustang Alley is where Mustang owners gather every year without being asked.
Revealing it in front of that crowd, in the middle of a parade, in Metro Detroit, says more about who the car is for than a convention center reveal ever could.
If You Are Going
The reveal is at 4:30 p.m. Friday as part of the opening parade, which is the day before the Dream Cruise main event on Saturday. Our full Woodward Dream Cruise guide covers parking, timing, and where to post up, and our Things to Do coverage has the rest of the weekend.
