Every Free Outdoor Movie Night Left in Metro Detroit This Summer

Metro Detroit is sitting on a full calendar of free outdoor movies, and nobody has put the whole list in one place. Downtown, Movie Nights in the D runs every Friday at Campus Martius through August 28. On the west riverfront, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy screens films on Wednesdays at the new Ralph Wilson Park. And for a bonus night out, Lake St. Clair Metropark hosts free Sunday concerts into September. Pack a blanket, and this list covers the rest.

All details below come from the organizers, and every event is free to attend, with one honest parking note flagged where it applies. For more no-cost nights out, see our Things to Do coverage.

Fridays: Movie Nights in the D at Campus Martius

The Downtown Detroit Partnership runs this one every Friday night on the lawn at Campus Martius, and four titles remain this summer. The lineup: Zootopia 2 on August 7, Superman on August 14, KPop Demon Hunters on August 21, and High School Musical on August 28. Seating opens at 6 p.m. and films roll at 7 p.m., so arrive early if you want a good patch of lawn. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair, and popcorn and refreshments are available for purchase.

Regulars arrive by 6 p.m. to claim a spot, and blankets and chairs are welcome. Food is available for purchase on site. For exact showtimes each week, check the Downtown Detroit Partnership page before you head down.

Wednesdays: Movies at Ralph Wilson Park

The newest screen in town sits in the newest park. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is running a six-week Wednesday movie series at Ralph Wilson Park on the west riverfront, sponsored by the Huron-Clinton Metroparks. Gates activities start at 6 p.m., and films roll at 7 p.m. at the DTE Foundation Summit, with food for purchase each week.

The series started July 8 and runs into mid-August, and each week’s title posts on the Conservancy calendar. Better still, the park itself is the show: the 22-acre riverfront space opened last fall, so a movie night doubles as a first visit.

Sundays: Free Concerts at Lake St. Clair Metropark

Not a movie, but it belongs on the same calendar. Lake St. Clair Metropark hosts a free concert every Sunday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Activities Center, running through September 6. Remaining acts range from Motown and blues to tribute sets, including The Best of Billy and Elton on August 2 and Motor City Josh and the Big 3 on August 16.

One honest note: the concerts are free, but the Metropark itself requires a vehicle pass, which costs $10 per car daily or comes with an annual pass. For a lakefront evening with a picnic, it is still one of the cheapest shows in town. Full lineup sits on the Metroparks concerts page.

Before You Go: The Smoke Caveat

This summer has already brought wildfire smoke advisories to Metro Detroit, and outdoor events can postpone when the air turns unhealthy. Therefore, check the host’s page or social feed on the day of the show, especially during alert weeks. Our Detroit air quality guide explains the alert levels and where to check current readings.
