RADwood 2024: Reviving the Best of ’80s and ’90s Car Culture in Detroit

Detroit recently hosted RADwood 2024, a nostalgic celebration of all things 1980s and 1990s, drawing thousands of car enthusiasts and fans of retro culture to Hart Plaza. Known for showcasing vehicles, fashion, and music from these iconic decades, RADwood’s return to the Motor City was a testament to Detroit’s enduring role as a global automotive hub. From the moment attendees entered the event, they were greeted with a display of hundreds of classic vehicles ranging from American muscle cars to imported sports cars, many of which defined the automotive landscape of the ‘80s and ‘90s.

One of the standout moments was the special selection of Mustangs from The Henry Ford Museum, which brought a unique slice of automotive history to Hart Plaza. Alongside the impressive car displays, live music by Detroit DJs paid homage to the era’s techno roots, while fashion contests brought attendees dressed in their best retro outfits, making the event a cultural time capsule. Car enthusiasts were treated to hands-on experiences with ride-and-drive opportunities featuring standout cars like the Nissan R32 Skyline GT-R and the Autozam AZ-1, icons of the ’80s and ’90s automotive scene.

Adding to the excitement, RADwood teamed up with Hagerty and Michigan Central for the first-ever Cars at the Station event, which took place the day before at the newly renovated Michigan Central Station. This free community event was not just about nostalgia—it celebrated Detroit’s future in the mobility space. Attendees were able to explore the Michigan Central campus, home to Newlab’s innovation hub, which focuses on groundbreaking mobility technologies. The event featured vehicle debuts, panel discussions with industry leaders, and test drives of both classic and modern vehicles, blending Detroit’s automotive heritage with its forward-thinking innovation.

The event also served as a precursor to the Detroit Auto Show, scheduled for January 2025. The synergy between RADwood and Detroit Auto Show amplified the energy around the city’s automotive culture. As Detroit continues to reassert itself as a leader in the global auto industry, events like RADwood not only celebrate its past but also highlight the city’s future as a hub for innovation and mobility.

In addition to the festivities, the setting of Michigan Central Station—an iconic symbol of Detroit’s rebirth—served as a fitting backdrop for Cars at the Station. This event offered attendees a chance to experience Roosevelt Park’s redesigned landscape and explore the station, which has become a beacon of Detroit’s transformation. With both historic vehicles and cutting-edge automotive technology on display, the event connected Detroit’s storied automotive history with its future aspirations, offering something for both longtime car lovers and those interested in the next wave of mobility innovation.

As Detroit gears up for the highly anticipated Detroit Auto Show in January 2025, car enthusiasts can look forward to more exciting announcements, exhibits, and experiences that will continue to solidify the Motor City’s reputation as a global epicenter for car culture. Whether it’s celebrating the past or looking toward the future, Detroit’s automotive legacy remains firmly rooted in its streets, with events like RADwood bringing that legacy to life for a new generation of fans.
